The influence of virtual character actions and emotional expressions on trust in autonomous vehicles

Abstract

A study with 36 participants examines how a virtual character’s actions and emotional expressions affect trust, situational awareness, and acceptance in a simulated autonomous vehicle. Actions had a stronger influence on trust than emotions alone, while participants preferred the combined action-and-emotion character.
