Human perception of swarm fragmentation

Abstract

Fragmentation in robot swarms can reduce efficiency and prevent the swarm from completing its task. This study examines how humans detect and anticipate fragmentation across swarming, flocking, expansion, and densification behaviours. Participants performed a binary discrimination task, and the results show that expansion and anticipation are especially difficult while separation distance and speed guide judgments.
