Measuring the Impact of Objects' Physicalization, Avatar Appearance, and their Consistency on Pick-and-Place Performance in Augmented Reality

Abstract

This paper measures how object physicality, hand appearance, and their consistency affect pick-and-place performance in Augmented Reality. Across virtual, real, and mixed object sets, performance improved with the number of real objects; hand appearance had little overall effect. Alternating between virtual and real objects nevertheless reduced subsequent performance with real objects, revealing a key transition cost for AR interaction design.
